Enhancing Well-Being in Dentistry: The Role of Self-Care

By Laura Thompson, TePe Clinical Education Manager

Dentistry is a demanding profession that requires precision, empathy, and resilience. However, the intense nature of the work can take a toll on mental health. It's crucial for dental professionals to prioritise self-care to maintain their well-being and provide the best care for their patients.

As dental professionals we often face high levels of stress due to the nature of our work. Factors such as long hours, patient and practice expectations, patient anxiety, and the physical demands of dental procedures can contribute to mental health challenges. Studies have shown that dentists are at higher risk of experiencing burnout, depression, and anxiety compared to other professionals.

Burnout

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. In dentistry, burnout can result from the constant pressure to perform, manage patient expectations, and deal with the physical demands of the job. Burnout can lead to reduced job satisfaction, decreased productivity, and even physical health problems.

Depression and Anxiety

The high-stress environment of dental practices can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety. Dentists may experience anxiety related to patient care, fear of making mistakes, or the financial pressures of running a practice. Depression can manifest as persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, and difficulty concentrating.

Signs of Mental Health Issues

According to the Dentistry Census 2024, more than half (52%) of dental professionals surveyed admitted to seeking help for mental health issues, which is a significant increase from 31% in 2021. The 2024 Census also revealed that 70% of practice principles struggle to unwind after work, and 27% regularly feel insecure due to their work. Additionally, one in five respondents reported experiencing suicidal thoughts. I myslef am one of those statistics and you can read my story, Smiling Behind The Mask.

The Importance of Self-Care

Self-care is essential for dentak professionals to manage stress and maintain good mental health. Here are some effective self care strategies:

Physical Self-care:

Regular Exercise: Physical activity can reduce stress and improve mood. Even short, daily workouts can make a significant difference. Connect with nature, it is proven that spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can improve low mood.

Healthy Diet: Eating nutritious foods support overall health and can boost energy levels.

Adequate Sleep: Ensuring sufficient rest is crucial for mental and physical recovery.

Emotional Self-care:

Mindfulness and Relaxation: Practices such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can help manage stress and promote relaxation. There are many apps (Insight Timer, Headspace, Calm etc) and YouTube videos avaliable to guide you through this.

Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be therapeutic way to process emotions and gain perspective. I always apply 3 wins and a lesson, perhaps a situation with a patient I would like to improve next time.

Hobbies and Interests: Engage in activities that you enjoy and that help you unwind, do something you love whether it's reading, gardening, playing a musical instrument etc.

Social Self-Care:

Connect with Others: Maintain strong relationships with friends, family, and colleagues. Social support is crucial for mental health.

Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and set limits to avoid overcomitting yourself. This helps prevent burnout and ensures you can prioritise time for self-care.

Seek Support: Don't hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional if you're feeling overwhelmed. Therapy and counselling can provide valuable support and coping strategies. This was the key to improving my own mental health, the hardest part was walking through the door and shrugging off my own expectations of the stigma behind mental health issues.

Self-care is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It's important to find what works best for you and make it a regular part of your routine. By prioritising self-care, you can protect your mental health, enhance your resilience, and improve your overall quality of life. Remember, taking care of your mental health is not a luxury - it's a necessity. By investing in self-care, you can ensure a balanced, healthy, and rewarding personal and professional life.
