Rachel felt the academy content could be expanded for individuals who might require extra assistance with their dental hygiene. Having already consulted with her course tutors, who advised there was no conflict of interest, she asked if TePe could supply some toothbrushes, disclosing tablets, specialist brushes and leaflets and we were happy to assist (she also tirelessly sought out other dental hygiene providers and secured supplies of toothpaste, mouthwash and more to create packs for each user). All of the products were gratefully received by Rachel and the service users.
Rachel created a two-session learning programme, delivering basic oral hygiene information encouraging the service users to undertake simple dental hygiene procedures, providing a positive impact on their oral health. As many users were also heavy smokers and frequently drank high sugar drinks, the challenge was even more significant, but Rachel found that by simplifying the techniques to use, and by providing clear and concise instruction, she was able to secure a high level of engagement with her advice. Rachel had really positive feedback from the service users, who have requested further information on gingivitis, caries and links to diabetes, which Rachel has been able to signpost to the relevant qualified practitioners. Rachel is a great example of how information, when delivered in a comprehensive and accessible fashion, can have a huge impact on users’ oral health, and TePe wishes her every success in the future.
