Effects of articial intelligence-assisted dental monitoring intervention in patients with periodontitis: A randomized controlled trial

This study was based on a patient population with periodontitis undergoing non-surgical treatment. The aim was to evaluate the effect of an at-home, artificial intelligence-assisted dental monitoring application on periodontal parameters. A smartphone camera for intra-oral scanning and assessment enabled the procedure.

First, all participants received full-mouth scaling, root planning, oral hygiene instructions, and periodontitis-related knowledge. Then, two intervention groups were formed, one that received AI support as an addition, and one that received AI support combined with personal oral health counselling from a dental hygienist. A control group just receiving the basic package was also included in the study. The study period lasted for three months.

 

All groups showed considerable improvement in probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, gingival index, and plaque index. The most significant improvement was seen in the group receiving AI combined with individualised counselling, followed by the group receiving only AI support.

 

The authors conclude that AI-assisted dental monitoring may be a way to strengthen adherence to oral hygiene regimes.
