Can inflammation develop around implants?

If plaque builds up around implants, the gums quickly become inflamed. This inflammation is called peri-implant mucositis and is common. The inflammation must be treated quickly before it penetrates deeper into the gums. As the inflammation progresses, there can also be bone loss around implants, which is called peri-implantitis.
